sprucing them up, and selling them on for a tidy profit. Think you can join them? Here are a few things you need to know first.
Find a website
Your first step in the process is to find a website for sale. There are hundreds of online portals out there that act as brokers or marketplaces. They have enormous lists of sites that are for sale, for all kinds of prices. Don’t buy anything just yet, though. This is only the first step in the process and only for making you aware of the kinds of opportunities that are out there.
Set a budget

There are websites for sale for all kinds of budgets, no matter how small. However, in general terms, the cheaper site you buy, the more work will need doing to it. You should be looking for a few things. First of all, you want a website that is active, earning a regular profit, and, preferably, covers an evergreen subject. While you can go niche and make a killing if trends change, it is always better to minimise your risk. A good website that is ready to start earning for you will cost a four figure sum, at best. It is possible to spend only few hundred pounds, however, especially if there are growth opportunities.
Perform due diligence

There are a few questions you need to ask before taking the plunge. First of all, look out for some common red flags and ask yourself why are they selling the site? It might have received a new penalty from Google, for example, or it could be selling dodgy products such as movie downloads. You also need proof of the site’s revenue - screenshots with a date are essential. Ask for images of their Google Analytics, too, to check that their traffic claims have some truth. Finally, look at the seller’s history and feedback on the platform you are buying from. Any sign of a bad reputation should encourage you to walk away. If you are new to the game, it might be worth speaking to someone with a lot of experience. Ask around your business network and find someone who can help.
Make your improvements
Once you buy the site, start making improvements right away. If you don’t have time yourself, hand over the reigns to a professional - include these costs in your initial budget. You could get an ecommerce agency to help you if the site is selling products, for example. Or, you could find a web copywriter that can help you improve your online copy. The idea here is to make the website more successful than it was previously. Once you have hit your targets, you can think about selling the site.
Sell the site
If you have improved your site enough, you can expect substantial returns, even after a month or so. Then, with the extra money, you can look into buying a better quality site. As you can see, if you do a good job, it’s an opportunity to start a stable business that could escalate over a short period. Good luck!
