Door to door selling has been a way of garnering business for hundreds of years. It is a clear and simple way of promoting your products and services on a face to face basis whilst giving you the best chance of making a sale. Yes, you can be a hindrance, but if you go about it the right way there is no need to worry. You can spread word of your business and even make some money along the way.

Dress To Impress

First impressions are everything in life. If you don’t make the right first impression then you’re going to struggle for the rest of the engagement because you’ll have to work to win them back over. Your best bet is by wearing a suit. Suits offer a respectable air and instinctively people will trust you and what you say. You need to represent your business in the best possible way. Think of yourself as an extension of your business, what people think of you is in turn what they will now think of the service you offer.

Know The Techniques

There are hundreds of different sales techniques out there. Finding the right sales enablement tactic can be the difference between making a sale or simply annoying someone. Remember to modify your tactics to the situation too. You may need to offer different products to different households. The same applies to demographic. Sales tactics that work on younger people simply won’t on older people. You’ll need to speak more slowly and adjust the pitch of your voice to suit the situation. Be adaptable, don’t get caught up in the same old spiel as it will end up sounding robotic and be of no interest to the person you’re trying to persuade to part with money.

Back Off

If the customer makes it perfectly clear they’re busy or don’t want to know then smile, thank them for their time and be on your way. All you need to do is ask if they have a moment to discuss the product you’re selling. Don’t keep pushing otherwise you’ll annoy them and may even receive a bad review online somewhere, damaging your brand. This also applies to constantly knocking the door. Even if you see someone in the house, don’t keep knocking. They obviously can’t or don’t want to answer. You would be better off spending the time with someone who is more receptible to your approach than knocking a door for an extended length of time.

Try A New Area

Don’t keep knocking in the same areas, try other places. Word quickly spreads, so if you aren’t getting much luck in an area word will quickly spread among the neighbours and you’ll be seen as a nuisance. The reverse is true however, if someone buys and likes your product word will spread and you’ll end up with people coming after you instead of the other way around. As such, you would be better off trying areas that are far away from each other, you’re more likely to spread the word this way.
